Inspector Trainee

Job Description

Position / Job Title:  Assistant Inspector

Job Purpose*

The position will be responsible for the prevention of animal suffering and cruelty through assisting with the enforcement of relevant animal related ordinances and investigation of reported infringements, assisting animals in need (including rescuing such animals), humanely transport animals to the SPCA or other locations as directed by the rostered supervisor, undertaking euthanasia of animals when required to do so and assisting community education initiatives on animal welfare matters.

 

Roles & Responsibilities*

  • Attend trainings and work with assigned teammates as a trainee during the probation to understand operational procedures and protocols. Start to work independently after the completion of probation, outstanding performers will be considered for the promotion.
  • Assist the Chief Inspectors in the following daily work according to the direction and supervision of the rostered supervisor:
    • Investigation and prosecution of animal abuse / cruelty cases under the relevant animal ordinances (including acting as a witness in court); and
    • Keeping of records; and
    • Taking appropriate action to safeguard animals and educate their keepers; and
    • Rescuing and transporting animals to the SPCA (or other location as instructed by Chief Inspectors or duty veterinarian); and
    • Performing euthanasia when required, inspecting premises where animals are kept (such as markets, pet shops, boarding and breeding establishments and slaughterhouses); and
    • Maintaining the inspectorate vehicles.
  • Assist in other operational procedures for the effective management and performance of the Inspectorate and follow protocols for any duty performed.
  • Assist with training of staff and volunteers as required.
  • Assist with data collection and report production as instructed by the Chief Inspector.
  • To be aware of public relations issues involving the Society and liaise with AFCD, HKP, FSD, FEHD, Kadoorie farm and other relevant bodies on operational issues and in maintaining a good working relationship.
  • Liaise with other departments in the SPCA on matters involving the Inspectorate.
  • Assist in the promotion of the Society at public events.

 

Qualification*

  • Secondary education or above.

 

Requirements*

  • Experience in animal handling and care.
  • Holder of driving license (Class 1 and 2).
  • Good command in written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
  • Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to work on shifts in uniform including overnight duties.
  • Recognized qualification in first aid is an advantage.
  • Genuine interest in the welfare of all animals.
