Duties:

The appointee will contribute to the development of advanced and functional fiber materials within a dynamic team. The key responsibilities include:

• Fabrication of Engineered Fibers: Develop engineered and functional short fibers and multifilaments through techniques such as melt-spinning, (dry jet) wet-spinning (lyocell process), and gel spinning. This involves incorporating additives, creating unique fiber shapes, surface modifications, and adapting micro/nanoporous structures along the fiber.
• Yarn and Fabric Development: Innovate in yarn production using various twisting methods and develop knitting structures with computerized flat knitting machines. The goal is to study and correlate the functional properties of the resulting fabric prototypes.
• Fiber Applications: Focus on the application of fibers in areas such as apparel, upholstery, outdoor activewear, and industrial uses.
• Material Characterization and Testing: Conduct thorough characterization and performance testing of fiber and fabric materials, tailored to meet the specific requirements of industrial partners.
• Support for Scale-Up and Commercialization: Facilitate the scale-up and commercialization of R&D results, particularly in the textile and garment industries.
• Technical Reporting and Presentations: Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations in a timely manner.
• Innovation and Idea Incubation: Contribute to the incubation of ideas that support the core technological developments of the team.
• Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

• PhD in Textile Chemistry, Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, or Engineering;
• Minimum of 2 years of industrial experience in developing functional or sustainable fibers or fabrics;
• Expertise in Melt-Spinning, (Dry Jet) Wet-Spinning (Lyocell Process), and Gel Spinning Techniques, with a preference for experience at the industrial scale;
• Experience in Yarn Development, ideally at the industrial scale;
• Extensive expertise in the characterization of fibers, multifilaments, and yarns;
• Hands-on experience in scaling up and commercializing R&D results;
• Proficiency in Technical Writing and Reporting;
• Ability to work independently and take the initiative;
• Team-oriented with strong problem-solving and communication skills; creative in generating and incubating new ideas;
• Proficient in spoken English and Cantonese; proficiency in Mandarin is an advantage; and
• Candidates with less experience may be considered for an Engineer role.
