Counsellor (International School - Lower Primary)

The School Counsellor plays a crucial role in promoting the social, emotional and mental wellness of students withing the educational environment. They are responsible for implementing a comprehensive counselling programme that addresses the diverse needs of students, facilitates personal growth and enhances academic success. The counsellor collaborates with staff, parents and community stakeholders to create a supportive and inclusive school culture. 


Main Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with leaders and teachers to integrate wellness strategies into the school culture and adhere to all safeguarding and child protection policies, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students and encourage positive behaviour and personal responsibility among students 

  • Provide individual and group counselling sessions, maintain accurate documentation of student progress and interventions and ensure that all students receive timely and effective support tailored to their unique needs 

  • Be responsible for maintaining confidentiality while recognising safeguarding and child protection limitations

  • Provide prevention, intervention and crisis response services to students, their families or other stakeholders, promoting holistic wellness and support for all students 

  • Be an active member of the Student Support Team and will contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) goals and meetings, to organise and develop resources required for the counselling programme. 

  • Play a key role in developing resources and lessons for the implementation of the YCYW Life Skills and Wellness Curriculum 

  • Lead workshops and lessons that promote active participation and personal growth in the different Life Skills and Wellness Curriculum units 

  • Support character development initiatives by fostering a positive school culture based on respect, inclusivity and empathy 

  • Initiate and deliver professional development opportunities within the specified areas Identify and engage key internal and external speakers/training based on identified needs in our community, emergent and future trends 

  • Engage in community outreach by hosting workshops and informational sessions for staff and parents 

  • Engage parents in positive parenting techniques 

  • Provide any ad hoc support to school student support team when needed


Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree or above in social science or related disciplines and with licensure as a school counsellor or mental health professional 

  • Minimum two years full-time teaching/counselling in a school setting or equivalent experience

  • Strong understanding of child development, mental health issues and counselling techniques and experience working with diverse student populations 

  • Expertise in developing and facilitating workshops and training sessions for a variety of audiences including students, educators and parents  

  • Skilled in leading and managing comprehensive wellness programmes in an educational setting 

  • Evidence of skills in managing risk/difficult conversations/disclosure with tact and sensitivity  

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding/child protection and commitment to safeguarding and inclusion practices 

  • Has a positive, energetic, enthusiastic, result oriented and a team player

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, families and staff
