The Department of Ocean Science at HKUST is looking for a full-time Research Assistant. The appointee will be responsible for providing administrative and technical support to the Principal Investigators’ research and their laboratories, including budgetary operations, purchasing, reimbursements, and recording and filing inventories. The appointee will also take care of general affairs in the Department’s communal laboratories and teaching activities, including cleaning and sanitizing communal spaces and equipment, as well as other housekeeping duties. The appointee will perform any other duties assigned by the Department.
Applicants should have the following knowledge to work in laboratories:
- general laboratory equipment, common chemicals, common laboratory consumables, and their operations or uses;
- common biohazardous agents, chemical compatibility, and proper hazardous materials handling and disposal procedures; and
- general laboratory safety rules for monitoring and maintaining daily operations in compliance with the university’s safety requirements.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in science disciplines. Applicants should have good computer knowledge, a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese, a strong sense of responsibility, good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to understand instructions and work with minimal supervision, the ability to work independently, and be self-motivated. Working irregular hours and outdoors, performing physical activities such as lifting and moving items, and assisting in field trips or teaching cruises are required. Fresh graduates are also welcome. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.
